Kinda Similar to a Sonogram...

Well, after exactly 60 days since beginning our dossier work, it is complete....or almost complete! The dossier is the group of documents needed to send the "Africa" government telling them we are who we say we are....it includes things such as letters from our bank, local police reports, medical reports and so on, so forth. We had gathered all of the forms needed except the I-171 .... that form is from US Homeland Security (following our fingerprints) stating we are cleared and approved to bring home an "orphan". Now, because it comes from the overwhelmed and quite possibly overworked government, it could take anywhere from 1 day to 10 weeks (I guess even more) to be returned to us. And our dossier wouldn't be complete without it!

For the past five weeks I have been putting Garrett down for his nap and then going directly to our office (which has a window that can see our mailbox) and putzing around while I wait for our mail lady to bring my most longed for piece of mail. And usually around 2-2:30. I have even learned to sit at the computer with my back to the window, able to hear the exact sounds of her squeaky tires stopping and then starting between our mailbox and the neighbors. Pitiful, I know. And, as luck would have it, Thursday was the day for our I-171 to arrive.....creating this lump of bricks to become my new best buddy:

The next morning Kenny, Garrett and I got up, headed down to our adoption agency to pick up the remaining documents they were responsible for and then headed out to Austin, Texas for authentication. We arrived in Austin around 2:30 p.m., found the Secretary of State's office where the kind lady "authenticated" (aka: verified that all of the notarized documents in our dossier were done by REAL notaries and put a oh-so-official looking form on top of each document we had gathered).

Garrett and myself at the Texas Secretary of State's office joyfully holding our newly authenticated documents. Okay, if I'm honest, I was joyful, Garrett was hot and tired!

After that was done, we made our way about two blocks over to the handy UPS store where we made a few more copies of the original documents, organized, ordered and separated documents as necessary. Let me just stop here and officially apologize to my husband. I was a wreck in the UPS store. It was loud. It was crowded. And I was obnoxiously obsessing over the documents. And snipping and biting his head off for even looking in my direction. I was just SO nervous I'd put them in the wrong order or forget to separate them in the correct piles or tell the UPS man the wrong address and some dear old lady in D.C. would get my dossier and all this hard work would be lost. I probably over-reacted a bit. Or a lot. So, babe, I'm so sorry.
Next I handed over our precious dossier package to the frazzled and um, let's just say, non-motivated store clerk. I asked him to please ship this to the Assistant Stork near Washington, D.C. (He did so but you better bet I was totally obsessive and checked the shipping labels 100 times before finally letting it go.) Said "stork" will do the remaining two steps of authenticating our dossier by hand delivering it all to the U.S. State Department and "Africa" Embassy. Once she does that (in a few days) she will ship the entire dossier back to our agency for review & adding of our picture books and passport pictures (and maybe even more - that's all I can remember).
I know the UPS worker thought we were crazy asking him to take our picture holding an envelope full of mail. And all while Garrett included some Austin leaves. But I promised him this was a very special package. And, in my mind, this picture is almost like the equivalent of a sonogram picture. I don't have the belly to prove it, but our little one is on his/her way to becoming a part of our family.

So, without too many glitches, our dossier could possibly on it's way to "Africa" by the end of next week/following week. And we're told it could take 7-8 days to travel over there!

What's next? We wait for the call from our agency stating we are invited to attend a "match meeting" or "referral" for/of a child. I don't think I've ever stated it here, but we have requested a child (single), under the age of two.

This is real. I keep telling myself that. This is really going to happen. I tear up each time a big step is completed on our adoption journey because it means that we are one step closer to this really happening. We're one step closer to bringing home a little person to become a part of our family.

A Leisurely Day with Family

This past weekend, my brother, Kyle, was in town .... since he is a teacher and coach in Houston, he rarely has time free to come back up to Big D to visit. So, it was a treat to get to spend some time with him! One afternoon we all met up at my Dad and step-mom's house to cookout and hang out! Here is a glimpse at some of the fun....

Garrett found his "car" and it was a bit dusty and buggy - so he gave it a wash and loved it!

Garrett and Uncle Kyle

There are a few things, well, almost-obsessions, that Garrett adores: rocks and leaves. The boy will stop ANYWHERE to pick leaves or pick up a rock. He was thrilled that he could reach this tree from the top of his fort and pick leaves!!

And, of course, the little man was quite intrigued by Pop's grill....

All in all, it was a great time spent with family! My only complaint (and I'm noticing a pattern) is that we have very few whole group pictures or even pictures of Garrett with Mommy and Daddy. Hmm, something to work on!

A Peek Inside Memorial Day Weekend Thus Far...

The block we live on in our neighborhood had a party last night - complete with lots of yummy food and a bounce house for the kiddos! Garrett had a blast bouncing, running freely in the street (we had it blocked off & with a city permit - don't worry, he was safe), riding bikes, snagging chip after chip and filling up as many cups as he wanted with "orange" drink. It was a great night to meet new neighbors and hang out with the ones we've grown to love.

Garrett & Anthony (his little buddy) roaming the streets

Anthony (with G's glasses) and Garrett (on A's bike)

Garrett LOVED him some bike riding....and I LOVE this crinkle nose grin!

The boys playing their very own version of an oh-so-fun game: take-off-Garrett's-crocs-and-throw-them-up-in-the-air .... over-and-over-again.

And, this final picture is of G-man wearing the "hat" he made at church today. We are still not sure how it tied into his lesson, but, regardless he is SUPER proud of his creation. He even wore it out to lunch.

More to come....

Reminders from a three year old....

Car/driving time always allows Garrett and I to have some of our best and unexpected conversations. Today, while on our way to an appointment, Garrett was particularly talkative. And the topic was marriage. Really.

Actually, let's see, the conversation started out with Garrett asking why GG and Pop (my dad and his wife) don't have kids at their home. I explained that they DO have children and I was one of them. Which led me to explain how the how family dynamic works - which I'm sure is quite overwhelming to a 3 year old. Regardless, I ended my explanation by telling Garrett since I was a grown up I decided to get married and start my own family. And this is how things played out from there:

G: Mommy, when I am grown up I will get married, too. I will live in my own house and you can come and I will take care of you.

M: Oh, buddy that sounds really nice but you better check with your wife first - she may not want Mommy to live at your house.

G: My wife? Who will be my wife?

M: Well, I don't know, sweetie.

G: How about you, Mommy? I will marry you.

M: Unfortunately, you can't marry your Mommy. Or anyone in your family. Only other people who are friends.

G: I know, I will marry my friend, Emma!

M: Oh, is that so? You'll have to ask and make sure she wants to do that. She may want to marry someone else.

G: Oh, no! She WILL marry me. And we will have a little child named Anthony (another one of his buddies). We will live at our house and YOU will come to visit and I will take care of you.

M: Well, that sounds like a good plan, buddy. Let's hope Emma agrees!

G: What if Emma doesn't agree?

M: Then we'll just have to wait and see who you decide to love and marry. Who knows who it will be!

-Silence for a few seconds-

G: GOD KNOWS!!

Little stinker got me! Sometimes I forget or just don't realize just how much Garrett soaks in. I teach and teach and teach and a lot of the time I think it's going in one ear and out the other. But, Garrett does hear me and the words I say to him and the things I teach him are sinking into his little heart and mind. The fact that he reminded me that our God is all-knowing and all-encompassing was a wonderful reminder that I need to seize every opportunity to teach, teach, teach him and plant the seeds.

(And for those of you who need a daily update on the much anticipated, highly awaited 171 - it's still not here. Our case manager at our agency e-mailed me yesterday to say that USCIS told her this week "it's being processed". And so the wait continues.....)

Summer is a Comin'

Yesterday was SO stinkin' hot here in Texas so we busted out the trusty sprinkler toys for a little fun! Garrett had a blast running through the water & trying to drink it!

This picture is from a week or so ago....Garrett found this yellow yarn and made himself a little wig! He's a hoot-and-a-holler, that sweet boy!

SHIRT ORDER UPDATE!

Wow! We are still blown away by the amount of people "coming out of the woodwork" to support us in our journey to adopt our little one! Just yesterday I walked out to the mailbox and there was a check from a friend-of-a-friend....we keep saying it, but we are so very honored and humbled.

Here is a quick update on the shirts:

1. We are placing a large order tomorrow morning, so if you are interested in purchasing a shirt(s), please do so today/tonight. Once the orders are in, we won't be placing another one until we get a minimum order of 24 per design & you might have to wait a while to get yours. And we don't want that!

2. If you are looking for a fundraising idea like our shirts for your specific cause (adoption, mission trips, etc) you can contact the oh-so-fabulous friends of ours who designed all of our t-shirt graphics at http://belovedadoptionfundraising.blogspot.com/ . I have listed their info down under our t-shirts but wanted to make sure I made an announcement to be seen in a post, too. They (Scottie and Angela) have a heart bent towards orphans and are using their God-given artistic talents and gifts to help families like us.

All for now - and this should be the last post on t-shirts for a while ;) And, no, we have not seen that sneaky 171 as of yet.
